See 14-year-old Tiger Woods talk about race, golf and his future in the game

Trans World Sport has dug into its archives to re-release an interview with a 14-year-old Tiger Woods. The video, from November of 1990, features rare footage of Woods talking about race and his place in the game of golf:

"Since I'm black it might even be bigger than Jack Nicklaus. I might be even bigger than him to the blacks."

"I might be sort of like a Michael Jordan in basketball, or something like that."

Woods also spoke of feeling uncomfortable at many country clubs:

"It's not every day, but every time I go to a major country club — you can always feel it, always sense it. People always staring at you, what are you doing here? You shouldn't be here."

At the time of this interview, Woods was a five-time Optimist International Junior World winner and had been recognized as an AJGA All-American, and his competitive drive and confidence seem almost fully formed. (Related Photos: Tiger Woods, a Life in Pictures)

"My competitiveness. That sort of brings me through in the clutch. You have to make a putt, you make the putt. You have to make a shot, you make the shot. You just sort of drop into another zone and you block out everything, that's really helped me."

Truth & Rumors: Cristie Kerr says caddying for Corey Pavin helped her game

Less than a week after caddying for Corey Pavin at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Cristie Kerr won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Kerr is back in the hunt again this week after an opening 67 at the CME Group Titleholders in Naples. Turns out Kerr's brief time as a caddie gave her game a boost.

According to Randall Mell's Golf Talk Central report, Pavin stayed with Kerr and her husband Erik Stevens at their Scottsdale, Ariz., home during the tournament. Kerr, the ideal caddy for Pavin because of her familiarity with the course, picked up his bag for the last four holes of the third round. He birdied three of them.

Kerr's stint as a caddy wasn't just good for Pavin, but gave Kerr a new perspective for when she played.

“I didn’t really appreciate what caddies go through,” Kerr said. “I got a new perspective with that, and I think it gave me a little more patience with myself.”

Arnold Palmer to appear on cover of Tiger Woods’s new video game

Forget about Tiger and Rory. EA Sports, the makers of Tiger Woods's video game, knows who the coolest guy in golf really is.

That's right, Arnold Palmer will share the cover of EA Sports' "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14" with the game's star.

TigerWoods14

Even though this is Palmer's first time on the cover, he appeared in the 2006 and 2007 versions of the game. In a news release about the game, EA Sports offers a capsule of Palmer's career highlights that might be useful to young gamers more familiar with last year's cover star Rickie Fowler. (McIlroy appeared with Tiger in the European version of "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13.")

Palmer’s professional career spanned five decades and the box art image is taken from his most prolific years during the 1960’s. Among his many accomplishments, he recorded 92 professional victories during his career with 62 occurring on the PGA TOUR. Included in the total are seven major championships including four Masters, one U.S. Open and two Open Championships.

"Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14" includes three-time PGA Tour winner Keegan Bradley, up-and-comer Bud Cauley, LPGA Player of the Year Stacy Lewis and LPGA Rookie Lexi Thompson as well as Palmer and Woods on the list of 25 playable characters. It is the 16th edition of the popular game.

EA Sports does not have an official release date or price yet for "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14". Historically, each new edition of the game appears in early spring before the Masters. Last year's game for Xbox 360 sold for $ 59.99.

Phil Mickelson misses million-dollar shot at halftime of Chargers game

Mickelson-chargers_300Phil Mickelson's foray into football during Monday night's Chargers-Broncos contest brought mixed results for Lefty in front of his hometown fans.

Mickelson faced a 100-yard shot, from one end zone to the other, for charity in a promotion sponsored by one of his sponsors, KPMG. If Mickelson had hit the bullseye of the green-shaped target, he would have won $ 1 million for FirstBook, which donates books to needy children.

Instead, he missed long, earning just $ 50,000. But responses coming in from Twitter suggested that fans were not impressed, and San Diego fans proved less-than-sunny in their response to Lefty's shot.

Mickelson didn't let all the fans down, though. By all accounts, Lefty, who owns Chargers season tickets, showed some impressive insight when asked to break down the contest as part of ESPN's pregame show.

"I haven't had this experience; this is an amazing experience," Mickelson said. "In golf, we don't get this. The 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale has nothing on this. This was awesome, seeing the Jumbotron with my picture, as I'm looking up taking the shot, that was unique. That was something that was pretty cool.''
