Truth & Rumors: Rory McIlroy thought he blew Ryder Cup for Europe

Rory_watchLate-arriving Rory McIlroy celebrates the European Ryder Cip win with a giant clock (ZUMAPRESS.com).

Central Time Zone victim Rory McIlroy showed up just minutes before his Sunday singles match at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah before coolly dispatching Keegan Bradley 2&1 to help the Europeans secure their miracle comeback.

But if he looked cool on the outside as he arrived at Medinah in a police car, McIlroy was terrified that he had lost the Cup for Europe.
McIlroy told the story of that morning in an exclusive interview with Ireland's RTE:

“On the Saturday night, before I went to bed, I was watching the Golf Channel and they posted the tee-times (for Sunday). But they posted them in Eastern time and we were in Central time in Chicago, so 12:35 Eastern is 11:35 in Chicago.

“Next morning I get up and get out of the shower at 11am. I get a phone call from Conor, my manager, and he says ‘Are you at the golf course?’, and I tell him that I’m not.

“He says ‘You should be, you’ve got half an hour to your tee-time’.
“And I say ‘No, I’ve got an hour and a half, I’m off at 12:35. He says ‘You’re not. You are off at 11:35’.

“I have never been so scared going to a golf course. It was such a mad rush. Luckily there was a state trooper waiting for me and if it was not for him, if I was not in that car, I would not have made my tee-time.

“I actually played my best golf of the whole week on that Sunday!”

Rumors: Is McIlroy buying a mansion in Palm Beach Gardens?

Gossipextra.com, a gossip site that covers South Florida, reports that Rory McIlroy has signed a contract to buy one of the most luxurious homes in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The story, which cites "several real estate sources" and "a golf source" but doesn't have anyone confirming the deal on the record, says that McIlroy came close to matching the property's list price of $ 10.9 million. Here's more:

The house, built in 2012, offers 10,000 square feet of unique designs. There are six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a world-class gym, two stories of Zen decor and a private deep-water dock in the back.

Nice touch: There’s a putting green!

McIlroy, this year’s winner of the PGA Championship, will likely play across the street, at PGA legend Jack Nicklaus‘ private course at The Bears Club.

Truth & Rumors: Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els absent from Aussie Open due to appearance fees

According to a report by Australian Golf Digest, the absences of Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els from the Australian Open are both a matter of appearance fees.

Tournament promoters believed they had an "arrangement" with the Northern Irishman’s management for the 23-year-old to play the Australian Open in December.

But once the final putt was holed at Kiawah Island, the asking price for the new world No. 1 had escalated dramatically.

His appearance fee was about $ 1 million prior to the US PGA, upon winning a second, but major McIlroy’s asking price was twice that amount.

And that put him out of reach for Australian Open promoters.

It was another slap in the face following negotiations with Ernie Els, whose bounty rose after he won this year’s British Open.

Amongst the 156-player field are World No. 4 Justin Rose, Adam Scott, eight-time major winner Tom Watson, and 14-year-old amateurs Tianlang Guan and Andy Zhang.
