Phil Mickelson misses million-dollar shot at halftime of Chargers game

Mickelson-chargers_300Phil Mickelson's foray into football during Monday night's Chargers-Broncos contest brought mixed results for Lefty in front of his hometown fans.

Mickelson faced a 100-yard shot, from one end zone to the other, for charity in a promotion sponsored by one of his sponsors, KPMG. If Mickelson had hit the bullseye of the green-shaped target, he would have won $ 1 million for FirstBook, which donates books to needy children.

Instead, he missed long, earning just $ 50,000. But responses coming in from Twitter suggested that fans were not impressed, and San Diego fans proved less-than-sunny in their response to Lefty's shot.

Mickelson didn't let all the fans down, though. By all accounts, Lefty, who owns Chargers season tickets, showed some impressive insight when asked to break down the contest as part of ESPN's pregame show.

"I haven't had this experience; this is an amazing experience," Mickelson said. "In golf, we don't get this. The 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale has nothing on this. This was awesome, seeing the Jumbotron with my picture, as I'm looking up taking the shot, that was unique. That was something that was pretty cool.''
